Observable is the collaborative platform for exploring and visualizing data—founded by the creators of D3.js, Observable Plot, and Observable Notebooks. We help individuals and teams unlock insights through interactive visualizations, making data more accessible and dynamic.
We’re looking for a Senior Product Designer to shape how people interact with Observable. You’ll lead high-impact design initiatives, craft elegant and accessible interfaces, and collaborate closely with product, engineering, and advocacy teams. This is a high-ownership role where you’ll influence both the product and our design culture.
What You’ll Do
- Lead design from start to finish: Own the end-to-end process for new features—from research and ideation to polished execution.
- Collaborate across teams: Work closely with designers, engineers, PMs, and community advocates to bring ideas to life.
- Champion great UX: Advocate for accessibility and user-centered design at every step.
- Elevate our visual language: Create interfaces that are not just usable, but beautiful and aligned with our evolving design standards.
- Prototype and iterate: Quickly explore ideas and test them through interactive prototypes and user feedback.
- Present and influence: Communicate design decisions clearly and persuasively to internal teams and Observable users.
What You Bring
- 5+ years of experience in product design or UX/UI roles
- A strong visual eye and portfolio of intuitive, polished work
- Understanding of design for both desktop and mobile platforms
- Experience collaborating in cross-functional teams
- Self-motivated, organized, and excellent at problem-solving
- Degree in Design, HCI, or a related field—or equivalent experience
